Location: The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) requires a full-time Resident Engineer (RE) to work on-site at their office in Nashville, Tennessee. The initial term will be one calendar year with the potential for a multi-year engagement


Resident Engineer Core Services:


  • Provide proactive technical and operational support of all TDOT’s engineering and surveying operations that rely on a Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) platform, which currently includes Bentley MicroStation/OpenRoads Designer.
  • Develop TDOT’s CADD utilization capabilities to streamline the design process, improve TDOT’s operational efficiency, and facilitate increased sharing of CADD design data among TDOT’s engineering and non-engineering workgroups.



  • Provide proper management and technical operation of the Bentley CADD platform, as well as associated dependencies and databases
  • Provide planning for all CADD software installations, including upgrades, software patches, and the set-up of new user accounts
  • Work closely with the TDOT Engineers, Surveyors, Geographic Information System (GIS) users, and Photogrammetrists to develop strategies for making GIS and CADD data accessible by all platforms
  • Provide all necessary assistance to TDOT Information Technology (IT) staff personnel to ensure TDOT’s successful migration to the Bentley OpenRoads Designer 3D design environment, as well as the implementation of streamlined design and drawing management systems to improve the efficiency of TDOT’s design and construction processes
  • Performance of the following tasks:
    • Create and support plotting routines that will enable efficient output of large format, technical drawings by Engineers, Surveyors, and CADD Technicians (5%)
    • Support the use of the most current version of MicroStation software and extensions that are currently in use and anticipated for future migration (20%)
    • For all Bentley software, develop installation procedures to be used by TDOT IT’s Service Desk Technicians (5%)
    • Assist in monitoring and administering the Bentley EPS-365 / Enterprise License Subscription (5%)
    • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for any TDOT IT development efforts and operations utilizing CADD technology, including TDOT’s migration from MicroStation SS2 to Bentley OpenRoads Designer (40%)
    • Serve as SME for all efforts to streamline and improve TDOT’s design, construction, and maintenance processes that are dependent upon survey and engineering data (25%)
    • Assist in general support of TDOT’s CADD operations, including help in forming and leading a TDOT MicroStation user group (5%)
  • Complete misc. assignments as needed or required to assist TDOT.
  • Report to / take direction from the assigned  TDOT Manager for daily work assignments
  • Place of work will be TDOT’s office located at the James K. Polk Bldg., Suite 700 505 Deaderick Street, Nashville, TN 37243



Required Skills and Experience:

  • Expert knowledge of Bentley’s CADD platform (configuration and utilization) as well as all related dependencies and databases with special emphasis on
    • OpenRoads Designer
    • MicroStation
  • A Degree in Civil Engineering preferred. Alternately, a degree in Construction Technology, Information Technology, Computer Science, or the equivalent education, experience, knowledge, skill, and mental development is required.
  • Five-years or more experience in the management of complex data processing activities and technological systems, with special emphasis on highway design/plan preparation utilizing computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software applications and management of CADD processes and functions
  • Experience and comprehensive understanding of infrastructure projects and transportation workflows
  • Familiarity with and experience running and configuring Bentley software
