Forward Deployed Software Engineer

Location: Dublin, Ireland (Hybrid/On-site) 

Position Summary 

Operating directly within our global Product & Technology organisation, this role functions as an internal Forward Deployed Software Engineer. We are looking for an adaptable, highly autonomous senior engineer to tackle rapid prototyping, architectural de-risking, and tactical engineering initiatives. 

Rather than maintaining a traditional product lifecycle, you will partner closely with our leadership team, including the CTO, senior engineers and architects on short-cycle strategic initiatives.  Your customers are Bentley's global Product & Technology (P&T) organization - the teams responsible for building and operating the products and solutions that power our customers' success. 

You will take on complex, ambiguous technical challenges, rapidly evaluate solution options across the full stack, from architecture and design to hands-on implementation, build functional proof-of-concepts, and transition successful solutions to our core product teams. 

Responsibilities 

• Full-Spectrum Problem Solving: Fluidly navigate across varied technical domains depending on the project. One month you may be addressing deep performance profiling and cloud reliability; the next, you may be building modern front-end spikes or evaluating microservice patterns. 

• De-Risk Architecture: Architect, code, and benchmark functional proof-of-concepts (PoCs) to validate performance and evaluate emerging technologies before Bentley makes a company-wide commitment. 

• Operate Across the Stack & Cloud: Leverage a wide range of technologies, acting as a polyglot across multiple programming languages and major cloud platforms to deliver the right solution for the business. 

• Ensure Frictionless Hand-offs: Package your validated architectures, write the technical summary, and hand the clean, maintainable deliverables over to our global P&T teams so you can pivot to the next strategic unknown. 

Qualifications  

• 0-to-1 Experience: 7+ years of software engineering experience with a demonstrable track record of designing, building, and delivering complex, high-performance software in fast-paced environments. 

• Ownership and Bias for Action: You are highly self-directed, comfortable operating autonomously without extensive supervision, and driven to turn ambiguity into actionable solutions. 

• Curiosity and Learning Agility: You possess an aptitude to select the best tool for the specific problem at hand. You have working fluency across multiple programming languages (such as C#, TypeScript, Python, Java, or C++) and continuously learn new ones. 

• Empathy and Partnership: You view the global P&T organization as your customer, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring your prototypes are built with their eventual operational needs in mind. 

• AI-Amplified Output: Practical experience leveraging generative AI APIs, vector retrieval/RAG patterns, or daily integration of AI-assisted engineering tools to amplify output. 

• High-Signal Communication: Ability to synthesize complex technical discoveries, trade-offs, and architectural recommendations into direct, high-signal summaries for technical leadership. 

• Big Picture Architecture: Solid foundational knowledge of distributed systems, multi-tenant patterns, containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes), and at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
