Product Expert

Location: United Kingdom (Hybrid/Office/Remote)

Position Summary:

Product Experts contribute deep domain expertise to the definition of the “right” product to build and ensure that Bentley is at the forefront of infrastructure engineering practices. Product Experts complement and support Product Managers (who have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that Bentley builds the right products to meet user and industry needs), by bringing technological/scientific advancements and user perspectives to bear on team strategy, roadmaps, and development plans. With their uniquely deep understanding of Bentley’s user base and needs – often gained from having previously done the customer’s job – Product Experts represent and anticipate the user perspective with unique precision. In partnership with and in support of product managers, they help bridge the gap between industry needs and technical development.

We will rely on you for the following:

  • Support the product manager and product team by acting as a voice representing industry trends, technological advancements, and customer needs. Partner with internal colleagues, including Marketing, UX Design, and User Success, in pursuit of the same.
  • Closely monitor scientific and technological developments. Assess whether and how internal teams could benefit from or better serve customers via new approaches (e.g., improved scalability, more efficient delivery). Work with PM and Development teams to support appropriate incorporation of technology into product strategy and development plans, in line with other team goals and plans.
  • Stay abreast of competitive developments to ensure that Bentley remains responsive, and bring awareness of these developments back to the product manager and team for evaluation and discussion.
  • Support future product enhancements by researching the most appropriate protocols, algorithms, and technologies to ensure Bentley’s ongoing competitive evolution, product development/maintenance cost reduction, and feature efficacy.
  • Conduct or support research and technical explorations to identify opportunities for product teams to smoothly incorporate the newest technology. Do the legwork needed to identify and quantify the benefit of opportunities, advocate for low-cost ways to begin incorporation, and prepare the team for longer-term shifts in technological foundations.
  • Initiate or participate in user research to support team efforts at strategy development, hypothesis validation, and user/usability testing.
  • Bring a cross-company perspective and help ensure functional consistency across products and product lines. Proactively assess adjacent Bentley products and identify potential synergies. Advocate for APIs or other protocols that can make functionality integration simpler, and empower your team to make its own features accessible/usable to other teams.
  • Earn the trust and respect of industry audiences by speaking about the underlying science at trade shows, industry conferences, etc. In other situations, support the product manager’s preparations to speak at conferences, trade shows, and to users.
  • Be familiar with internal Bentley technical and business strategies, and drive or support the Product Manager’s and Development team’s work to align with the same.
  • Support each phase of the product development lifecycle, with activities such as (but not limited to) the following:
    • Plan: Track advancements or breakthroughs produced by our competition and identify threats they may present. Work in partnership with Product Manager and Development to determine if or how a given industry trend will affect the product backlog
    • Explore: Support hypothesis creation and testing regarding how a product or service will solve a particular industry problem. Engage with external professional networks to support product research and prototyping.
    • Define: Provide technical guidance to the Development of the algorithms and science behind a problem.  In collaboration with Product Management, work with the User Experience team to validate user workflows, wireframes, etc. with representative users from target accounts as appropriate, to ensure that they are optimal for how the user will engage with the product.
    • Develop: Attend meetings, such as sprint planning and spring reviews, when required to provide context and clarification on requirements. Support QA in their development of test plans and execution of user acceptance testing.
    • Launch: Validate certain product capabilities with early adopters representative of the target market. Support Marketing via the creation of technical marketing materials such as release notes, wikis, and whitepapers.
  • Recognize that the Product Expert role is a new position, will evolve, and be willing to adapt with and inform company needs regarding the role
